Barlaston Summer-School 2003

The 43rd annual Barlaston Esperanto summer-school takes place in 2003 between August 9 - 15. As usual there are two levels of instruction (intermediate and advanced) with an emphasis on spoken Esperanto: this year the range of classes is to be slightly widened. The summer- school offers the chance to gain confidence in Esperanto as well as to explore finer points of Esperanto style and expression. Language of instruction - as well as during the 'social' times of the day - is Esperanto. The atmosphere is friendly, helpful and constructive and, by the end of the programme, all participants should handle Esperanto with increased ease and fluency. Details about costs, as well as accommodation and meals, are available from Wedgwood Memorial College, Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent, ST13 9DG.

Membership renewals

Because of inertia, many members are very slow to renew their membership. I have assembled a very efficient and pleasant team to help me contact the backsliders and so, if you fall into that category, expect the 'renewal team' to contact you! Sometimes of course it is not inertia which causes people not to renew. There can be many causes for this. To help your Association, if you come Into this last category, we would like to know why. To save inertia overcoming intention to renew, why not complete a standing order form?

A national list of second-hand books for sale

It is proposed to publish a list of second-hand books which are available for sale by post. If you, or your local club or Federation have some, please get in touch with David Kelso. This list, which will show the title, author, translator if there is one, guide to condition, sale price and where available, will be put on to the EAB web site and will be also available as a printed list, at a price to cover costs, from the EAB office.

How to find cheap air fares

There are several Internet sites where you can do this, but a new one is the easiest to use. It is www.skyscanner.net. When you have chosen your destination and the month in which you want to travel, it displays a bar chart with-the varying prices for each day so you can easily choose. Unfortunately it only covers the budget airlines and only goes 4 months ahead, but it will be useful for the World Congress in Gothenburg.

Obituaries

In October two well-known personalities in the British Esperanto movement died: Peter Danning of London and Lawrence Mee of Manchester. They had both been unwell for some years. We would like to offer our condolences to their families and friends. Articles about Peter and Lawrence will appear in the next edition of Brita Esperantisto.

Will Green has also died. He had a stroke in December and died on January 7th. Please see page 10.

George Soros kaj Esperanto

Centenary Celebration

Muriel Shackleton from Bradford writes On Saturday 9th November 2002, Keighley Esperanto Society and the Yorkshire Federation celebrated 100 years of Esperanto in Keighley, where the first Esperanto Group in England was formed by Joseph Rhodes. Dr. Ian Dewhirst, a well known local historian, unveiled a bust of Zamenhof, carved by Keighley member Eric Buckley. This is now in Keighley Library alongside the memorial to Joseph Rhodes. Dr. Dewhirst also gave a short after dinner speech on Keighley and the formation of the Esperanto Society 100 years ago. A celebratory cake was cut by the president of the Keighley Group, Audrey Duerden, the president of the Yorkshire Federation, Brian )'Sullivan, and Dr. Dewhirst, guest speaker. Graham Blakey was present, representing Esperanto Association of Britain and it was heart warming to see individual members who had taken the trouble to travel from Cumbria, Wales, Lancashire and Cheshire and from the northern and southern limits of Yorkshire to support this event.

Free Computers for (Esperanto) Education

A Rotary-supported project, Free Computers for Education, is now looking to help schools which teach Esperanto, particularly in developing countries. The charity encourages industry to provide them with second-hand computers, which would otherwise be dumped in landfill sites, refurbishes them, and provides them to schools where they could be made good use of. Because of the 'thin client' technology that they use, they are able to make them more reliable than second-hand stand-alone PC's normally would be.

Grahame Leon Smith, who runs the charity, is now planning to target schools where Esperanto is taught. He has reached an agreement with a Brazilian school in Alto Paraiso to provide them with 15 refurbished PCs. The school, Bona Espero, is in two parts. The main part is a home for disadvantaged children, set up to offer a good home and education for the children, and to provide them with a humanitarian outlook.

Esperanto plays an important part in their lives, and they are regularly visited by helpers from all over the world, who can contribute to the children's interest and education. The older children go to the Bona Espero school in the town, where they join other children in Alto Paraiso. I understand that about half of the teachers in Alto Paraiso were educated at Bona Espero.

Grahame is planning to extend the scheme to Africa. "We've already provided free computers to various schools in Africa", Grahame told NetNews, "and we can now set up an Esperanto operation as part of our African project". Free Computers for Education works through local Rotary clubs. Bona Espero and their local Rotary club are already working together in other ways, and this connection should make it easier to persuade an airline to provide free transport of the computers from the UK to Brazil. The African project has already supported schools in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

The cost of refurbishing the computers comes from donations. Grahame now wishes to set up an Esperanto fund. Refurbishing the computers costs fifty pounds each, and donations can now be accepted over the web on a secure server by credit card. Details of how to sponsor the activity, or how to help in other ways, are given in their website http://www.free-computers.org/ under 'Sponsor us, please!' - but indicate somewhere in the form the word 'Esperanto'.

Esperanto Way

Esperanto Way, Newport was named at a ceremony during the Esperanto Congress in 1999. Esperanto Way, Newport is the base of D. Gibbon & Sons, specialist bakers, who make a variety of breads which are widely distributed in South Wales and the West Country. As the word Esperanto figures in the address on each wrapped item, thousands of homes each week see the word (if they read the small print! -Ed.)

Sent in by Frank Buckley - regular eater of Gibbons' bread.

Publicity close to home

Viv, our affable and competent office administrator, has sent information about Esperanto and an invitation to visit Esperanto House, to the school which her son attends. They have also accepted several books, including 'Mil Unuaj Vortoj' for the school library.

Modernaj trompoj

35a Internacia Infana Kongreseto (IIK)

Ne tro for estas farmbieno kun ĉevaloj. Estas ekstere tabloj, benkoj, kradrostejo kaj sporta tereno. Ĝi estas trankvila loko, sed ne tute izolita. La loĝigo estos konvena sed modesta. Infanoj devos kunporti proprajn lit-tukojn kaj ban-tukojn.

Personally Speaking

Whilst visiting friends in the Wakefield group recently, one of them showed me a small book. It was called 'The Little Book of Essential Foreign Swearwords' by Emma Burgess (£2.50 ISBN 184024 239 6) Yes, it had a page in Esperanto! That reminded me that Don Lord once told me of when he was being interviewed by Carol Thatcher, daughter of the 'Iron Lady'. She said "What's the use of a language in which you cannot swear or make love?". Of course Don put her right about that. She then asked him to say some swear words in Esperanto. Don replied that she should give him some examples and he would translate them. Carol Thatcher, (being a prim girl?) declined to do so! Later on, at the Saffron Walden Congress, Don gave a lecture on "Tabuaj Vortoj". This was recorded and put in the Bendoteko. Unfortunately, like several other good cassettes it 'disappeared'. [Postscript: "Tabuaj vortoj en mondlingvo (CD-ROM)", containing a video recording of that talk, can be purchased from the EAB bookshop.] Regrettably the powers that be at the time at Holland Park, did not preserve the original recordings and make copies for loan, but lent out the originals. Some silly mistakes have been made in the past and, in my opinion still continue as with the decision to re-institute a Lending Library at a great cost in money and resources when there is no proved demand for it.

Something else has made me furious (and I am supposed to be a peaceful minded Quaker!) and I apologise now to those who think that in Esperanto magazines one should be neutral in all controversial matters. Do you ever buy 'Nestle' products? I would ask you to think again if you do (and that includes Wedgwood Memorial College). £3.7 million pounds is the amount which Nestle is demanding from almost the poorest nation on earth - Ethiopia. This is because 27 years ago, the then communist government nationalised a local business belonging to Nestle. Of course Nestle really need this money, which might otherwise be used to feed the starving millions of that land, so spare a tear for the shareholders of Nestle, owners of a company which last year made a profit of £3.4 billion, yes billion! So please give up your Nescafe and buy one of the Fair Trade products which are now available in most supermarkets. I will now await criticism for using Update to condemn a pitiful company such as Nestle. (Nestle now say they will return the money as a donation. I wonder if they would have done this without the worldwide condemnation they have received?)

This is the final edition of Update which I shall edit I originally started it as a stopgap during the last days of the old L.B.E. when Bill Auld was editing it. It has been a great pleasure to produce it. I have also resigned from the Management Committee of E.A.B. but I hope that I shall be able to keep in touch with many of you through the two web sites which are specially for British Esperantists. And also via emails, telephone and ordinary post.

Eric Walker.

A Enjoyable Holiday

Letters to the Editor

Karaj Samideanoj
With the enlargement of the EU in the foreseeable future to possible twenty five nations, there have been articles again in the media about the language problem. A recent article in The Guardian was quite representative of perhaps the majority opinion expressed in this country: that English should be the 'official' language of Europe. I believe there are historical and cultural reasons for the narcissistic belief that the Anglo-Saxon village is the centre of the universe and that the English language and culture should be 'adopted' by the world. I always remembered the scene in the film Colditz, when upon arriving, John Mills says with complete astonishment: "Doesn't anyone speak English here?" as if he were arriving at a pub in a London back street: that's the average Englishman's (and woman's) attitude that I have seen countless times abroad. There is more hope for an open mind towards the international language in mainland Europe, where there is a greater awareness of language rights and the centrality of language to culture (think of Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Slovakia, Czech Republic, even Italy - who wants to speak Italian except Italians - and less so the younger generation who, like British youngsters, would prefer to speak like Sylvester Stallone).

'The Prague Manifesto' is partly reflected in EU policy, which is 'to respect languages and cultures of all EU citizens,' but in practice the Anglo-Saxon policy is to remake the world in the Anglo-Saxon image. Thus, it can be demonstrated that Esperanto is the key for all nations, especially minority nations, in Europe, to have their language and culture left intact by Anglo-Saxon 'globalisation'. In short, Esperanto must be presented to the countries applying to join the EU, as well as current member states, as not only the solution to the 'communication problem', but also to satisfy the need for 'respect for the languages and cultures of member states of the EU', as the indigenous language and culture will then be preserved. If made EU policy, all schools in the EU would then have Esperanto as the aŭiliary language for all Europeans. Finally; Esperantists have the solution to the problem of 'labour mobility' in the EU: The ECB should adopt Esperanto!

Chris Maddox

Necesas do, ke iu retajpu la tekston (proks.

A single euro-language

Peter Viggers, Conservative M.P. for Gosport suggests a single Euro language

A whole new language needs to be dreamt up and used across European Union institutions in an effort to cut translation costs, a Conservative MP has suggested. Peter Viggers suggested the new single European language could be called Eural and have as its British spokesman John Prescott, often accused of mangling English. The union's 11 official languages already produced 110 language combinations, a number which would rise to 506 with EU enlargement, he said. Mr Viggers admitted his idea for a new language called "Eural" was fanciful but argued something needed to be done about the EU's £150m a year translations bill. English would have been his preferred choice, as it was the world's third most used language and was first tongue in 104 nations, said Mr Viggers. Peter Viggers: Worried about translation bill But he said: "The chances of persuading the French to give up French as the second de facto drafting language in the EU is zero."

The Gosport MP continued: "As with the currency, instead of choosing the strongest and most widely used, the EU chose to create something new and artificial called the euro. Following that precedent, it would be logical to create a European language." The idea might be "fanciful", he said, but so was having a single currency based on a growth and stability pact called stupid by the head of the European Commission. Who better than Mr Prescott to be the UK minister responsible for Eural, he asked. The Single European Language Bill produced by Mr Viggers was given a first reading in Parliament but stands no chance of becoming law.

(Would someone like to tell Mr Viggers about Esperanto?- Editor)

Radio Broadcasts in Esperanto

Salutas vin elkore, lan Mac Dowall, Wirral (GB)

Esperanto Garden

At the moment the garden around Esperanto House will be lying dormant, but many plants and bulbs should be stirring before too long and I hope that there will be a bit of colour in the spring. Several donations have been received so far. La Blanka Rozo provided white roses; South Lancashire Esperanto Group sent a fine selection of alpines which now surround the bases of the star sculpture and explanatory board; FBCE made a generous donation; and gifts of money were received from guests at a recent Ruby Wedding.

During the Inaugural Event three trees were planted in the meadow near Esperanto House: an Irish Yew by Maire McKay, a rowan by Jack Casey, representing SEA, and several young lads from Skipton planted a cedar. Four Lawsonia conifers were planted in the autumn in memory of George Lawson MP, an Esperanto speaker and supporter. A lot of thought and back-breaking work has gone into turning a rather derelict piece of ground into the pleasant area which it now is, but much remains to be done. If you would like to contribute to this unique venture, please send your donation to Jean Bisset. Cheques should be made payable to Wedgwood Memorial College with Esperanto Garden written on the back.

International Association for Religious Freedom

Annice Szajbman writes to say that she attended a meeting of the International Association for Religious Freedom. This is an ecumenical body and there were speakers from the Unitarians, Methodists as well as from religions other than Christian such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. Also someone spoke about the Chinese sect: Falun Gong. Annice spoke about the value of Esperanto as an easy method of communication between peoples of different cultures and beliefs and there was a warm interest in her remarks. Annice has also written to express her interest in the idea that we should plant trees in remembrance of our friends and acquaintances.

Will Green

Kiel memoraĵon de Will, mi persone pripensas la profesian infanan bildvortaron 'Mil Unuaj Vortoj', kies eldonadon organizis Will, tiel demonstrante siajn ideojn ke eblas kaj elspezi kaj profiti samtempe. Certe mi ellasis multajn inkluzivindajn informojn pri Will, kaj pri lia kontribuo al Esperanto sed sendube estas aliaj kiuj povus tiajn rakonti.

Ian Fantom

Thank you from Hon. Treasurer

Donations
Thank you members and friends for your gifts. Even small amounts which you may have added to your cheques are recorded, adding up to £1,238 for the year ended 31st October 2002. This includes donations to the Esperanto Garden and the new Education Fund. You may tag any donation for Library, Education, Publicity or Afrika Fonduso (the fund set up in memory of John Brownlee). On the balance sheet of the annual accounts, these funds are lumped together under the heading 'Restricted Funds'.

Gift Aid
The result of so many members and supporters signing the Gift Aid Declaration was a tax reclaim of £1,134 last year. EAB is able to claim the Income Tax on donations as well as membership subscriptions. If you pay Income Tax, please consider signing a form if haven't already done so.

Legacies
The Association benefited from several legacies recently: Bernard Smith bequeathed £200 for education, Edmund Ashcroft £840, and Reg Bedford £30,600. The executors of the estate of Phyllis Strapps have so far paid EAB £100,000 from her estate. The demise of such long standing and valued members is a sadness, but their generosity will ensure the future of Esperanto in Britain for years to come. I promise it will not be put on a racehorse, (see N. MacKilligan's letter, Update 16.
