EAB Update/Ĝisdate No. 18, June 2002

The views expressed in EAB-Update are not necessarily the views of the Management Committee of EAB.

"Education, Education, Education"

With this issue of EAB Update you will find a copy of our latest colour brochure "Here's a free opportunity to learn about Esperanto, the international language". It promotes our courses and includes the first lesson of our introductory Free Postal Course. This brochure is not for you to throw away or to file away, it's for you to give away, to a friend, colleague or acquaintance who is likely to be interested in learning more about Esperanto.

We have appointed a team of experienced Esperanto teachers to review and renew our entire portfolio of courses. Their top priority is a replacement for our (rather dated) paid beginner's course; Angela Tellier and Malcolm Jones are writing this.

They are working to a challenging target of having a trial pack ready in time for the public opening of Esperanto House later this year. In due course (pun intended) they will consider our other learning material, including the role of free educational material. One proposal under consideration would be to replace the free postal course with a free introductory booklet, along the line's of Butler's "Esperanto for Beginners". However, it takes time to develop a professional-standard course, more so a complete portfolio of educational material, and in the meantime we are using this new colour brochure to promote the existing Free Postal Course.

If you or your local group could usefully distribute more copies, please contact the EAB office and ask for a stock of the brochures. We must stress that any distribution has to be carefully targeted at people likely to be interested in learning the language - we do not want these brochures handed out on street corners or stuffed through letter-boxes, because that is not a cost-effective use of the material. The best practice that we have heard of so far is from a member who visited her local library and arranged for the librarian to hold a stock of these brochures, to hand out to enquirers. This is much more productive (and cost-effective) than simply asking permission to leave a pile on the counter, where people will tend use them as scribble-pads or bookmarks. If you have any other ideas on good ways to deliver the brochure to our 'target market' with minimal wastage, do please write in.

EAB Membership Fees

Andrew Marshall of Grimsby has pointed out that no-where in EAB-Update have we ever shown the membership fees of EAB! Yes, he is correct! So here is the information:

Full membership costs £25.00 per year. For those on reduced incomes there is a concessionary fee of £20. For this sum members receive EAB-Update 5 or 6 times a year, plus La Brita Esperantisto which currently comes out annually, plus 'La Ondo de Esperanto' 11 times a year. Also, if they have Internet facilities they can receive NetNews 12 times a year provided that they have registered their current email address with EAB NetNews. Members can also vote on resolutions which are put to the A.G.M. and also for the candidates for the Management Committee of EAB. (From this year they can appoint a proxy to vote for them if they will not be at the A.G.M.)

Supporting membership costs £10.00 per year. Supporters receive the above services apart from La Brita Esperantisto, La Ondo de Esperanto and of course they do not have the right to vote.

Family Membership costs £40.00 per year. This covers two adults and their children. They receive everything that a Full Member does and can receive two copies of everything if a request is made to the EAB office.

XXXVI Internacia Esperanto-Feriado

Wojska Polskiego 12. Al nia dispono estos 2 ĝis 4 personaj ĉambroj kun propraj banejo kaj televidilo, surloka manĝejo, du terasoj, loko por rostado, sporta ekzercejo kaj saŭno.

En la feria programo ni antaŭvidas:
- lingvajn kursojn por komencantoj kaj progresantoj,
- prelegojn, filmojn kaj literaturajn vesperojn,
- dancadon kaj kantadon,
- montarajn piedekskursojn ĉirkaŭ Miedzygorze
- viziton en Klodzko kaj Bystrzyca Klodzka
- dimanĉe sanktan meson en la lingvo esperanta,
- rostadon kaj ĝojfajron,
- por volontuloj ekzercojn de jogo

Language Students

Tramp
I have mentioned this magazine before. It is published by 'Pola Esperanto-Junularo and is available free from them. The March issue has articles about a visit to Australia, Sopot, (a seaside resort in Poland), world climate and about the Zoastra religion.

Beautiful and Intelligent!
Well all Esperantists are intelligent, that is self-evident of course. But I would not like to pronounce on our personal beauty. Nevertheless, I cannot keep it from you that Denisa Cela, a 15 year-old Esperantist has won the title - Miss Albania 2001 !

Skolta Esperanto-Ligo serĉas novan redaktor(in)on por la liga revuo La Skolta Mondo.

TEJO

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor Eric,
Thank you for sending me EAB-Update. I look forward to receiving this publication as my Esperanto is still in the basic stage. In addition to the Calendar of Events, I would like to read of other club/groups (i.e. when and where they meet). I would like to think that there are other Esperantists out there!

I hope that EAB-Update will continue and expand. l'm sure that L.B.E. will be welcomed by many members. I will endeavour to translate the articles with the aid of a dictionary. Perhaps something for 'progresantoj' next time?

I am looking forward to the Congress at Stoke on Trent.

Margery Coombes, Filey, Yorkshire.

P.S. I have an EAB handbook dated 1999. Is a new one being prepared?

Ed. I understand that the wheels have been set in motion for a new edition of the handbook. Let's hope that the motion will not be too slow!

David Featherstone, DEAB. 1923-2002

After joining EAB, David soon gained his Diploma and joined the Esperanto Teachers Association, subsequently becoming a committee member. As a member of EAB's Educational Commission he tutored for different courses. Regularly David provided EAB's "Calendar of Events" for 'La Brita Esperantisto'. David excelled in Christian circles. His local church plus British and international Esperanto committees enjoyed his unique contribution. In the London monthly services, he provided piano accompaniment, until no longer able. David translated a hymn for Esperanto's centenary in 1987, included in the new hymnal "Adoru".

A delegate of UEA, David also provided Esperanto bibles and hymnals. He remained in contact with the British & Foreign Bible Society until quite recently, arranging a new ecumenical Esperanto translation.' During later years as his health worsened, he needed more time and effort to express himself, yet loyally supported events, although constantly less able to participate. On 8th march he died of a heart attack. Esperanto was mentioned during David's funeral service to a full church, comprised of all his relatives and others, including Esperantists. He was buried at Warlingham cemetery. An Esperanto service was held in his memory in London on 12th may. Condolences go to his widow Nora and the family.

Martyn McClelland.

The 'write' lines

[The talk given by Paul Gubbins at the British Esperanto Congress May 2002]

For those of you who like translation exercises here's a little test. Put into English the maxim 'sendu - ne plendu' (retaining, of course, the character of the original). My version - not as. neat as the Esperanto but the best I can do after a wearisome day's work - is 'mail - don't wail'.

'Sendu - ne plendu' cropped up during my talk at the Stoke congress about La Brita Esperantistp. What I meant when I used the phrase was that I want people to let me know what Is happening in Esperanto-Britain if no-one tells me what is going on then there is no point complaining that this or that club event, federation gathering or weekend course has not been covered.

Hold on you might say. Haven't we got Update to tell us about Esperanto happenings in Britain? Indeed we have - but La Brita Esperantisto differs from Update in several important respects. Firstly it is entirely in Esperanto. Secondly, in reporting British Esperanto events, it can probably do so in more depth (and whereas Update appears more frequently and serves as a calendar of future events, La Brita Esperantisto - published bi-annually Is able to take a more reflective approach). Thirdly, it seeks not just to report events but to conserve the best of spoken and written Esperanto In Britain: In the past outstanding lectures have taken place before perhaps a couple of dozen esperantists; similarly, excellent essays presented to the University of Liverpool have passed into oblivion - these, quite rightly, can now find a wider audience via La Brita Esperantisto. Fourthly the publication offers a forum for poems and short stories: there is talent among Esperantists in this country and that talent needs to be tapped.

Underpinning all this are people. This may sound crass but It is at the heart of editorial policy of La Brita Esperantisto The publication must reflect its members and accordingly I have introduced the section Kiu kiuas?' ('Who's who?') which profiles not the grandees of the British movement but, to cite Zamenhof and the UEA house-magazine 'Esperanto', the 'dillgenta kolegaro' - those who work hard for Esperanto in Britain, often unsung and behind the scenes. I also include with articles a brief biography of contributors: again, people matter.

A couple of other points. I welcome contributions (including, and especially, photos) and letters for La Brita Esperantisto but I reserve the right to edit them. I will also not knowingly publish anything which has appeared or is about to appear elsewhere in the Esperanto press. There is too much recycling of material in national, international and electronic Esperanto publications: what you get in La Brita Esperantisto is fresh, original and reflective in some way of British - not global - Esperanto.

I believe that in Update (English, and covering as it were everyday Esperanto events), in La Brita Esperantisto (Esperanto and taking a wider look at British Esperanto) and in La Ondo de Esperanto (Esperanto and handling international Esperanto Issues) members of EAB are offered a package as comprehensive as any to be encountered in Esperantujo. Hence, while I appreciate that some readers of this article do not receive La Brita Esperantisto, I would urge them to subscribe: quality Esperanto is surely one of our aims.

Finally La Brita Esperantisto is not my personal toy or hobby. I had enough of playing journalists when I did it professionally in the real world -I do not need La Brita Esperantisto to act out Scoop-like fantasies. The publication belongs to members and it is up to them - to you - to determine what goes into it. In other words, it all depends on mailing, not wailing. So - over to you!

Paul Gubbins Editor, La Brita Esperantisto

Congress Lecture

During the May 2002 British Congress Martin Howard gave an Interesting talk about the world of 'potting'. It's a real eye-opener to realise that there are so many fascinating facets to this hobby which can quickly almost take over your life. Martin has produced a 24 page listing of 'Ceramikaj Terminoj'. The Update office can supply copies of this for £1.00 In stamps.

From the Media

A letter in 'The Times' From His Honour Judge Alistair MacDuff, QC
Sir, Mr Roger Guthrie's reference (letter, August 23) to the cost of translating EU business brings to mind the story, said to be true, of when a French MEP was required to explain, in the European Parliament, what was being done to solve the crisis caused by a transport dispute in Normandy.

The MEP is quoted as saying "Ce problème sera résolu par la sagesse Normande".

German MEPs, Italians, Dutch and others nodded sagely, as the translation was fed into their earphones. Those hearing the English translation were reduced to laughter by: "This problem will be solved by Norman Wisdom."

(sent in by S-ro Maddox of London SE18)

BBC NewsOnline
[It is republicanism that seems an irrelevant, outmo.ded fad, a rather dated minority interest like Esperanto, plane-spotting or the League of Nations Union ... ]

Bradford Telegraph and Argus
The Bradford Telegraph and Argus of May 7th had a very large article about Muriel Shackleton and the enjoyable life that she has had using Esperanto. Local newspapers are usually most interested to print articles of this type. Could we have, say, 10 volunteers who would be prepared to do something similar? If so, and they would like some help, please contact David Kelso at EAB office. David is keen that this kind of publicity work should expand.

Two Magazines for Beginners and Intermediates

Both these are recommended.

La Juna Amiko is aimed at students and beginners. It is A5 size 28 pages, many of them in colour and is professionally produced. It appears 4 times a year. It's bright and up to the minute. A recent issue had an article about Harry Potter! The subscription is £8.00 and payment should be made to Paul Hewitt. Why not give a subscription for someone you want to persuade to come on aboard?

Komencanto is also for beginners and those just past this stage. It is A4 size with usually 12 pages. It comes out 8 times a year and costs £9.00 a year. It can be ordered from Eric Walker at EAB-Update.

The British Esperanto Congress, Stoke on Trent May 2002

On the evening of Friday 3rd of May, the impressive building of the old Town Hall at Stoke on Trent received visitors from all parts of Britain, where the advance guard of Congress members met to renew old friendships and make new ones. Esperanto was heard on all sides, here a serious discussion, there jokes and laughter. A good selection of new and second hand books had been brought by David Kelso During the rest of the weekend we had a variety of talks and on the Monday there was an excursion. Attendance was on the low side, around 70 people took part, including visitors from Croatia, Germany and Poland, but those who came would agree that it was a most enjoyable and worthwhile weekend. Personal reports by participants would be welcomed by the editor.

[EAB Update No. 18 Page 8]

In the notices of death in this issue, we report that of Adrian Oates. His widow sent to me the following. I am printing it because it shows how using Esperanto can deeply enrich ones life if you make the most of your chances.

Esperanto in Merseyside and North Wales both regional and international

I first met Butler's 'Teach Yourself Esperanto' in Philip, Son and Nephew's Liverpool shop in 1939 and bought it. I began to learn the language with fascination, but the War intervened.

After the War I began to travel extensively as senior paint technologist for Farbenfabriken Bayer. One day, leaving Holland Park underground station, I saw the Esperanto star above a shop, and went in to meet Herbert Platt, general secretary of the British Esperanto Association. Having quizzed me on my determination, he recommended the dictionaries of Butler, and Fulcher and Long - and I bought a new copy of Teach Yourself Esperanto.

My technical territory was England, Scotland, Wales and all Ireland. For twelve years I stayed in hotels four nights each week. Ideal for serious evening study. That began in 1967, and I joined BEA, and UEA in 1970.

Denis Williams, regional representative for Cheshire and of BEA saw my name in the British Esperantist and invited me to join his small study group - which I did. Ray Smith and Derek Ray were the other members. I rapidly progressed, and some years later gained the Royal Society of Arts diploma in Esperanto including the oral examination, with distinction.

I have always been interested in communication with those outside the U.K., being a radio amateur with call-sign G4MOU. But extensive travel prevented much radio communication. So I decided to test the use of Esperanto by correspondence; my first correspondent was in Iran, and a whole series of contacts was made. To the extent that in the long run I had received replies from 44 countries! Over the years a select group-of correspondents resulted, greatly honing my knowledge of the international language. Johannes Palu in Tallinn, Mine Yositaka in Japan, lise Nagel in.West Germany, Anne-Marie Bentz in Toulouse, Sabina Schwarzbaum in Tel Aviv, Alf Bechmann Sorensom In Norresundby, Denmark, Vasil Mitovski in Trojan, Bulgaria, Santiago Tornegrau in Sabadell, Spain and other valuable ones in Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Mauretania, Russia, Bulgaria, India and others.

As a radio amateur I used speech and not my usual Morse for transmissions, and spoke to members of I LERA (International League of Esperanto Radio Amateurs) in France, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Moscow, Russian Urals, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Brazil and the Argentine.

I was invited to make a lecture tour of Denmark, totally at the expense of the Danish Esperanto League, which resulted from a family holiday in the summer holiday home of Sorenson in Hals. My wife and I visited Austria and met three UEA delegates and I had a wonderful correspondence with Ing. Hans Zeller, chief metallurgist of Daimler Benz Puch of Steyr until his death. I spent two weeks visiting Bulgaria, stayed in the homes of two correspondents and visited a third. As a means of very detailed Intercommunication, Esperanto is fantastic. Two weeks in Bulgaria caused me to be unable to reply to the request of the air stewardess when she asked me in English "Tea or coffee?" for some seconds during my return flight!

We have had guests from Hungary twice and from France. Also visitors from Poland, West Germany, France, Spain, Japan and the USA.

Denis Williams, who had learnt Esperanto in the north-east during his youth, was chairman (prezidanto) of the Chester group, and chairman of the Esperanto Societo de Norda Kimrujo. The. Chester group offered to run the British Congress, and augmented members, including wives, ran that in 1978 with great success. Dr John Wells then lecturer in phonetics at London University was our star turn. I was on the Loka Kongresa Komitato. Years later, in 1987, Hilary Chapman, chief delegate for UEA in Britain, invited me to join his LKK 'as entertainments officer'. The congress in Llandudno was a great success. Don Lord, Buchanan Lecturer in Esperanto at Liverpool University was a star turn twice during the concert, the London Esperanto Club did Shakespeare, Dr Marjorie Boulton gave her talk on studies in Washington titled 'Sciuro'.

S-ino Elspeth Bormann, president of the German Esperanto Association in Hamburg congratulated us on the 'finest congress she had been to in Europe'. I had become Denis William's right-hand man in the North Wales Society and took over as chairman when his health declined. We met on the North Wales coast at Rhyl, and in the last years of that society in Mold. The ESNK was founded by Denis Williams just after the last war, and had 30-50 members during that period. The frequent Informilo, printed by Denis Williams as well as being written by him, bound us all together. I have placed issues 2 to 70 in the International Esperanto Museum in Vienna (IEMW), together with some Esperanto artefacts such as notices of Chester Club meetings, and a celebratory QSL card (amateur radio acknowledgment card) that I printed myself at my Dolphin Press, announcing the centenary of Esperanto, 1887-1987.1 myself had attended a course held by William Auld in Stanley, County Durham, three under John Wells in Abergavenny, three under Dr Cavenagh at Manchester University, and attended British congresses in Felixstowe, Weston-super-Mare (twice), Leamington Spa, Southampton, Bournemouth, Sheffield and in Morecambe. In Morecambe I gave a talk with colour slides on my fortnight in Bulgaria.

In 1987 the Chester Esperanto Group was 20 strong, though several attendees were hangers-on. My vice-chairman was Frank Sharman, an excellent Esperantist, who had visited Czechoslovakia, Russia and Poland twice. He was invited by Andrej Pettyn of Polish Radio to talk about his experiences with Esperanto on Radio Warsaw. l became quite ill in 1987and underwent an operation with quite a long recovery time! Frank Sharman was extremely busy with his work on computers at the Central Electricity Generating Board research laboratories, and was unable to take over chairmanship. There was no-one else of mature age with sufficient experience of Esperanto, and the group collapsed - a tremendous shame.

Dafydd

Samideane via, Germain Pirlot

An Opinion

"There are a lot of people that don't need persuading ... What they need is a way in..."

Rolf Fantom

A Train of Thought

(A) The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

(B) On the other hand, the French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

(C) The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

(D) The Italians and French drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

(E) Conclusion: Eat & drink what you like - it's speaking English that kills you.

Do Vi Deziras Iĝi Artifikisto

Verkita de Tony Levene, esperantigis Michael Cayley

* Kiam oni vendas iujn ajn troprezumatajn aŭ neestantajn varojn, la metodo ĉiam samas. Jen nia simpla gvidilo por iĝi financa trompisto.

* Elektu kompaninomojn kiuj estas variantojn de iu fama firmo - ekzemple Berkli Banko, Reĝa kaj Leĝa, aŭ Meril Saks.

* Kreu kelkajn akciajn kompaniojn, kaj enlandajn kaj kie! eble plej malproksime eksterlandajn:

* Via eldonaĵo plejparte traktu banalajn aferojn, ekzemple ordinarajn financajn konsilojn kaj notojn pri ĉijaraj vinoj.

* Ili ne vendu al vi sen aĉeti ion alian pli multekostan. Se mankas ia alia perilo, promesu ĉekon, sed certigu ke "ĝi perdiĝis en la poŝto". Aldonu grandajn asekuran kaj enten-elspezojn.

* Ofte ŝanĝu vian falsnomon - tio ebligos vindiri al la klientoj ke la homo kun kiu ili komercis estas forinta - eble eĉ en alian kontinenton. Probable ili ne memoros vian voĉon.

* Memoru ke malmultaj homoj plendos al la instancoj - iuj hontos, aliaj ne deziros altiri la oficialan atenton.

* Transigu ĉiujn monojn en nepenetreblajn eksterlandajn kontojn kiam ajn vi ricevas ilin.

* Malaperu.

Crazy English

Writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham.

If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth?

One goose, two geese. So one moose, two meese? One index, two indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you comb through annals of history but not a single annal?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all of them but one, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

In what language do people play at a recital and recite at a play? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike?

Editorial

Taking part in the Congress in Stoke on Trent this year was a pleasant experience bearing, in mind that this year, for the first year in several, I didn't have any tasks to do! Unlike Terry Page on whose shoulders had fallen almost the entire task of organising the Congress this year. Those who, like me, enjoyed the pleasant weekend must give grateful thanks to Terry. Quite a lot of our members think that we should hold congresses each year. Unfortunately, very few seem willing to take on the task of running them. As the old saying goes: "Fine words butter no parsnips". For 2003 the Scottish Esperanto Association have invited us to use their facilities and to make it a joint congress. But after 2003 what will happen? The new Management Committee will discuss this problem because without a Congress Organising Committee there will not be any future Congresses, just an A.G.M. as is required by law.

From time to time I get requests from children from overseas asking for a pen-friend. It is almost impossible to find British children to reciprocate and so I ask for someone to be a kind of pen aunty or uncle. It is a great delight to children to receive the occasional letter from such a person. In the last issue I mentioned that I had had a delightful letter from a child in Poland and asked for a volunteer. Not a single reply came! What a disgrace. Is it that really no one was interested? Or was it that people thought "Oh, someone else will take it on"?

There used to be an organisation called 'GeOnkloj' or something similar. It seems to have quietly disappeared like so many others. I know that we are all getting older but is it possible for us to re-found, in a small way, such an organisation? Please will anyone who would be prepared to write a short letter about 3 times a year to a child in a foreign country, contact me? Not much to ask! Don't let apathy take over, friends.

The talk by Paul Gubbins at the Congress (see page 6) was most entertaining. I greatly envy the ability of people like Paul to speak so eloquently. It is not just the style but also the content. Unfortunately I just stumble along. I always was a duffer at languages which is why, even though I speak it still most inadequately, Esperanto has been a boon to me. Put me in an Esperanto-speaking environment for a couple of days, and specially with a little tot of vodka to help, and I feel completely at home even though purists would frown at my grammar and pronunciation. Perhaps this being almost an 'eterna komencanto' helps me to look at the Esperanto world through the eyes of a beginner. Whether an 'eterna komencanto' should edit this newsletter is another question!

Eric Walker.
