Scottish Congress

[Reprinted from the Scottish Esperanto Bulletin, www.skotlando.org]

Dundee was worth the journey!

The Scottish Esperanto Congress took place on 5-7 June, in the Queen's Hotel, Dundee: an excellent venue.

Stano Marcek from Slovakia, editor of revuo Esperanto, lectured at length about his direct-method system which has been so popular in over 20 countries. He also lectured about editing revuo Esperanto. Stano was an asset to the whole congress

Hugh Reid pursued his challenging theories about Esperanto economics.

The AGM approved the recommendation of the committee that SEA should seek charitable status.

There was an Ecumenical Service and Alternative, a Banquet, a reception; and plenty of time for socializing.

The congress was particularly well organised by Andrew Weir; he wished time for personal contacts. The congress bags contained characteristic Dundee products including comics and marmalade. Real Scottish culture!

Numbers were somewhat disappointing (recession bites?), but overseas participants played a positive role.

Next year's congress is titled "Scottish and International Congress", and is in Berwick-upon-Tweed, from 2010-Jun-04 to 06. The guest speaker is Jakvo Schram fro Antwerp, editor of Sennacieca Revuo. The programme is still at teh plannning stage, but it is hoped to visit the island of Lindisfare, tide permitting!
