EAB News 2008-07-19: JEB summer meeting

Young Esperantists meet in Buxton

On Saturday 19th July, members of Junularo Esperantista Brita, the association for young Esperanto-speakers in Britain, met up in the picturesque Peak District town of Buxton for their annual summer get-together. Saturday was a relaxing day, spent exploring the town and comparing the relative merits of its many drinking establishments. It was also a welcome opportunity for me to get some last minute practice chatting in Esperanto before I head off to the international Esperanto youth congress next week.

Sunday was a far more energetic day! Those of us who weren't hungover rose bright and early, enjoying a hearty breakfast in our B&B before setting off for the hills. Parking at the Cat and Fiddle pub, we struck out across the moors, singing songs in Esperanto to keep our spirits up. After a pleasant stroll along the banks of Errwood Reservoir, the path became more strenuous and we climbed steeply uphill in an attempt to reach Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire.

I'm happy to report that we made it in the end, and the weather held up better than during last year's JEB meet-up in the flooded Stratford-upon-Avon! Whilst it's a shame that more people couldn't make it, it was a very enjoyable weekend and I'm pleased to report that Esperanto was spoken almost exclusively throughout. JEB are open to suggestions for future meet-ups, which generally take place on a quarterly basis.

(A longer report with more pictures can be found on JEB's own website.)
