EAB News 2007-07-07: OpenOffice Translation Marathon in Cambridge

OpenOffice Translation Marathon in Cambridge

On the weekend of 7th and 8th July 2007, British Esperantists Tim Morley and Delphine Minier-Carrée hosted a "translation marathon" at their home in Cambridge, for members of the international team working on an Esperanto-language version of the free OpenOffice software suite (word processor, spreadsheet, database etc.). The team have been collaborating over the Internet for several years, translating the programs into Esperanto, but this was an opportunity to meet face-to-face, and discuss some of the more difficult terms - the challenge being (as always) to translate not just the words but the meanings of the program menus, commands and messages, so that resulting terms are precise, and yet still understandable to everyday users who might not be familiar with specialist computing or mathematical jargon.

The project is still a "work in progress" so the team aren't ready to launch the Esperanto version of OpenOffice just yet, but you can read about their progress (in Esperanto) at http://eo.openoffice.org; any Esperantists wishing to take part in the activity - particularly by reviewing and checking the prototypes - are welcome to sign up via that website.

translating away... On the river Cam

It wasn't all work during the weekend - Tim entertained his international visitors to a guided tour of some of the historical landmarks in the city of Cambridge, and impressed them all during a trip on river Cam with his skill at propelling and steering a punt.
